“How to Grow Shiitake Mushrooms”
The Alpharetta Arboretum is pleased to present this class on growing the shiitake mushroom. Shiitake mushrooms are easy to grow, store well and are popular for their medicinal properties and culinary uses. Participants will learn about mushroom growth, selection of spawn, and proper care of shiitake logs. Each participant will take home one 4 foot log, which he/she will inoculate during the workshop. Each log should be able to produce shiitake mushrooms several times a year for 2-3 years or until the log has decomposed. Dress for a mess.

New Garden Shed at
Alpharetta Community Garden

Jim Waters, carpenter and builder of the new storage shed.
The Alpharetta Community Garden, a project of the Alpharetta Arboretum, is pleased to have a new and attractive storage shed for storing tools, wheel-barrows, hay, chairs and other garden necessities. The final phase of this project will be to install a rainwater catchment system to collect rainwater from the roof that can then be used in the garden.
Meet Emelie Coleman....

Emelie led the group gardening effort of the Milton High School Science National Honor Society at the Alpharetta Community Garden during 2011. It was a joy for me to work with her and this entire group of students as they learned to apply soil science, chemistry, biology and horticulture to the real life experience of vegetable gardening. We’re particularly proud of Emelie who began her freshman year at Harvard University during the fall of 2011 to study chemistry and global health.
Emelie told me once that “the garden has really inspired me. I want to incorporate gardening and organic practices into more than just how I eat. I might want to apply it in a career of some sort. “
I would be only too happy to see Emelie apply what she has learned at our Garden to her college and life career.
All of the students in the MHS Science National Honor Society are an inspiration to me. We could learn a thing or two from their curiosity and hard work.
